Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Into the UK

An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) essentially gives you permission to travel to the UK, specifically for those who are not required to obtain a visa but still need to register their travel plans digitally before arriving in the country; it allows for short-term stays for tourism, visiting family, business, or short-term study.

You will need to apply for your ETA before travelling to or transiting through the UK. You must travel on the passport used for your ETA application. You may need a work permit or visa even if you plan to do: unpaid work. Key points about an ETA:

Who needs it
Individuals from countries that are considered “visa-exempt” for short stays in the UK need to apply for an ETA.

Purpose
It acts as a digital pre-clearance for border control, allowing for smoother entry process.

Duration of stay
An ETA typically allows for stays in the UK up to 6 months.

Application process
You can apply for an ETA online, usually requiring passport details and a small fee.

You can apply now to travel to the UK, if you are a national of:

  • Bahrain
  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi
  • Arabia
  • United Arab
    Emirates

You must be a national of one of these countries and travel using a national passport. You cannot use other types of passports or travel documents. Who does not need an ETA

Help with the app
You can read the guide on using the UK ETA app.

If you cannot use the app
You can apply online. If you are applying for someone else who is not with you, you should apply online.

How long it
takes You will usually get a decision within 3 working days, but you may get a quicker decision. Occasionally, it may take longer than 3 working days.

Group applications
Each person must apply separately. You may get a decision at a different time from someone else in your group – even if you applied at the same time.

If you need to travel soon
You must apply for an ETA before you travel to the UK. You can travel to the UK while waiting for a decision.

After you apply
You will get an email confirming you have got an ETA. It will be linked to the passport you applied with. Your ETA lasts for 2 years. You can travel to the UK as many times as you want during that time. If you get a new passport, you will need to get a new ETA.
You still need to see a Border Force officer to enter the UK. An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK.
